Old Fashioned Soda | Bring back the 50′s and some old favorites by serving your guests these yummy drinks. Have them displayed on a table for choosing.

Old Fashioned Candy | Everyone has a favorite candy from their childhood. Mine are Slo-Pokes. Mmmm… takes me back to a summer as a little girl eating them out on the porch and picking the sticky carmel on a stick out of my teeth. Pull memories like that out of your guests! Have a candy station packed full of Old Fashioned yummy candy!

We’ve had our days of bubbles, butterflies, doves + sparklers… this idea, that is a custom in Germany, is beginning to make an appearance here. The main idea is to let a balloon carry a note that will eventually make it’s way back to bride and groom. You will need to purchase enough postcards for each guest to write a well wish. Ahead of time hole punch the post card and stamp it and make sure on the front of your custom postcard it says, “If found, please drop in the mail”. Hand them out to the guests when arriving or put them in their programs with a note on how to. After the ceremony, balloons are handed out to each guest to attach their post card to. All of the guests release the balloons at the same time. Hopefully when the balloons land they will be sent to the bride and groom by a gracious stranger. What a photo op!

Cost for 200 guests : $36 postage, $85 Helium Tank Rental, $49 Balloons/Ribbon, $130 Postcards

So after 3 months of intense planning we finally did it! We married Heather and Brent this past Friday in an alley wedding with 120 of their closest family and friends. We also had a packed side walk with onlookers trying to get a glimpse. After the ceremony, Heather and Brent hopped on a vintage moped, escorted by the Goshen Fire Department. I suggested the moped since First Fridays was hosting a vintage moped rally… what better way to incorporate the events that were taking place! After enjoying all of the food provided, we ushered Heather and Brent inside to have their first dance. Once their first dance was done, we had Menno Travel come up to FINALLY let Heather and Brent know where they were going. They speculated Las Vegas… I guess I give too good of hints…. so up comes Elvis and they pulled a miniature Viva Las Vegas sign out of a bag. Vegas Baby! We were so happy that our small little idea of having a mock wedding in an alley became a reality for Heather and Brent! Congrats you two! Enjoy Vegas!!! The Party Isn’t Over… Yet!

You begin your day at 8am fresh and ready to start your hair and makeup. Everyone gets ready then heads back to get dressed. Pictures are snapped and then depending on how you choose to do your wedding pictures, you get to see the love of your life for a short moment together before you begin. You take a few hours (2-3) to take all of the couple and bridal party pictures. Then before you know it, you are being told to hide because the guests are arriving and it’s almost time. You get called out to join your dad for him to walk his little girl down the aisle. You take a deep breath, the doors are opened and everyone is smiling at you. You walk to your fiance, say your vows, get pronounced and then walk out to greet guests. Before you know it you are at your reception eating, then cutting cake, then dancing…. you are completely enjoying everything but then the night ends so abruptly and you’re not ready!

Really, it happens that quickly. I wish every bride was allowed at least 10 more hours on her wedding day just to enjoy everything she spent the last year fretting and joyously planning. But since that’s not possible here’s an option to steal more time. Keep that photographer + videographer around! It’s only one day, why not try to make it last as long as you can possibly stand? Get shots of areas you wouldn’t have gone earlier on in the day. Have a mini trash the dress session – get dirty and be in love! All of the stress and nerves are gone now, why not let the intimacy that the two of you have REALLY show? There is always tomorrow to sleep on the plane on your way to Maui you know…

I’m taking this time to encourage our clients and others that follow our blog (we love you!) to really think about investing in a wedding website. It’s such a great idea to create one and add that information on your save the dates so your guests can keep up on accomodations, happenings and it’s a fabulous way to get them excited about your big day! Not only does it give a great guest experience, but it can help you keep yourself a little more organized with online RSVP options as well having all of your wedding info on one site. Ashley Troyer Events does offer website setup and maintenance but you can also do it yourself! Here are a couple of sites that we use on a regular basis with our clients. Check them out and let us know what you think!

Webmedo | I love this site because it’s flash animated, you can create a website address that is specific to you for free [ie. www.bride andgroom.com] and it’s only $59 for a whole year! It also includes a free Save The Date site as well as online RSVP!

eWedding | This site offers a few more payment options than Webmedo and if you aren’t picky about not having your own domain name and email address, they have a free option as well. Packages start at $49.95 per year. Includes online RSVP as well.

The obvious difference between the above websites are flash vs. html. Webmedo is flash and eWedding is html based with a flash splash page. Because of that, Webmedo is limited to 3 themes while eWedding has several themes. I’m partial to Webmedo because of the overall experience but eWedding is equally fabulous! Both have great customer service and help support.

Alternative Boutionniere Ideas

With modern weddings being so eclectic and ideas being truly what YOU like and not what everyone else is doing… we thought we’d throw an idea your way for a boutonniere that isn’t your typical rose and greenery. This particular design would be perfect for an outdoor, less formal wedding. It looks spectacular on the lapel of a brown jacket! We absolutely love the look because it seems to be something out of the woods or back yard of a country home.

Today’s brides are using more personalized details to customize their weddings so when we found this idea and project on Martha Stewart We knew we had to share it!

Think back to your childhood… Imagine yourself in your Grandmother’s kitchen, can you still smell the fresh baked cookies? Why not share that sensory with your wedding guests? Get grandma’s cookie recipe and take it to a bakery to have made as a favor or apart of your candy/sweets buffet! Use the simple packaging and customize with a sticker! Voilà! Homemade!

Finally! We have been waiting to blog this event for soooo long! We have partnered with Downtown Goshen Inc. + Goshen First Fridays to bring Downtown Goshen Throws A Wedding! It started as a simple idea that I would like to have someone have their wedding somewhere “different” – I mentioned an alley or a rooftop, you know somewhere kind of crazy??? Well, after talking with the director from Goshen First Fridays, Grace Hunsberger, we hatched a plan to give a wedding away to a deserving couple and create an event that would be way out of the ordinary! With the help of several gracious businesses we are able to give Heather Gaut + Brent Zebell a wedding on June 4th, 2010!!

Details:

CEREMONY:: The ceremony will take place in an alley beside The Wellness Studio on Main Street during Goshen’s First Fridays, we will be providing the decor and bridal party floral. Jules Boutique will be dressing the girls, Joselena’s will be dressing Heather and Snyder’s Men’s Shop will be getting the groom and groomsmen looking handsome! Cyd Gallery has provided engagement photos and will capture the whole day/evening. Salon J will provide hair and makeup.

RECEPTION:: The party will take place on Washington Street with several vendors providing food and drink for cocktail reception. Gretchen’s Revenge will be playing the ceremony music and we are so excited that Menno Travel Service will be giving Heather and Brent a free honeymoon that is a COMPLETE secret until the night of the wedding!

We can’t wait to complete the event and share all of our hard work with you but we just had to share the news! This definitely could not be possible with out the following amazing Goshen businesses + vendor support!

The title of this post comes from the lyrics, “Ironic” by Alanis Morrisette. I have always thought to myself, listening to this song… “now that’s unfortunate. Rain? Ick.” When planning your outdoor event we want you to know the following regarding lovely mother nature…

PLAN AHEAD! First and foremost, have a contingency plan! Whether that be a million and one umbrellas or an inside location that can the ceremony can be moved to quickly. You can purchase bulk umbrellas online. These could be used as favors and adorned with something to remember your day if the rain is inevitable. You also need to realize that if your ceremony is taking place on soft ground… it could be muddy. So when checking outdoor venue sites, look for a location that has an area with a hard surface. Think about your ceremony music as well… sound equipment typically isn’t weather proof. Ask your hired musicians or DJ if they have a tent or if you should rent one just in case. In case of a storm… ALWAYS have a back up location!
